Typical hole-in-the-wall Golden Gai bar held by an adorable French-speaking, movie fanatic, lady (I'll spare you the trivia about the bar's name and will let you google around for the whole bit)...
Surprisingly, despite being a recurrent feature of every single "wacky underground places that only you and a few millions other people will read about" guides, La Jetée manages to keep a nice and intimate atmosphere (having a seating capability for roughly 6 people probably helps too).
The (tiny) crowd is a mix of friendly regulars and occasional curious tourist, often sharing a love bordering on obsession for cinema (particularly the old, foreign and obscure kind).
- Definitely not the best place to go spend a night on the town with your 20 best buddies.
- Depending on day and hour, and provided you are ready to squeeze yourself between complete yet friendly strangers, you may be able to get yourself and one or two friends in.
- Beware: As with every other place in Golden Gai, there is a seating charge, and it's a bit steeper there (likely si in order to discourage touristy patronage). I think it's about ¥1000, which isn't much if you make it a night, but makes it a bad candidate for your next pub crawl.
- Safe bet you'll hear French spoken there (whether by hip-seeking tourists, long time residents or the bar owner herself). Of course Japanese works too.
- In order to find the door, you likely will have to trawl Golden Gai's alleys for a while (part of its charm, isn't it)... It's located roughly mid-alley in the 3rd or 4th lane (can't remember exactly) and on the second floor. The name is written (in romaji) on the door.
