I have been to Fonda De La Madrugada several times, yet having grown up with a mom who made nothing but authentic Mexican food, and lived in Mexico and East Los Angeles, I have to say this spot is so so as far as good Mexican food is concerned and it is expensive, but you will have a hard time finding a better place in Tokyo and I agree it has a wonderful atmosphere that is a pleasantly relaxing oasis in the hustling and bustling city that is Tokyo. There is one place in Tokyo which serves much better food than Fonda De La Madrugada at slightly lower prices, but it is very small so it does not have the nice atmosphere like Fonda De La Madrugada or the Mariachis, there is almost always a long wait, and with the exception of one small table in the back the only seating is on the counter, but you do get to watch the chef/owner prepare each dish right in front of you, plus he makes some good drinks and usually stocks some of the better tequilas ;)
I'll be the first one to say it - Mexican has finally come to Tokyo!!
And, having come from Southern California, this statement says it all. Everyone should support this place and hopefully other restaurants will follow its lead. Oh and don't make fun of the mariachi band. They came by our table, and after talking to them, I found out that these people were brought from Mexico just to play here, and they have real talent. They also have a female vocalist who has a really passionate and good voice. I told them, "why is no one setting up a concert for you in Tokyo?!". Right now they are only playing in the restaurant and in another Mexican restaurant that opened recently at Tokyo Midtown. I guess they will only be here a couple of more months, and so someone, if you have any connections, please find these guys a venue where they can play and be appreciated by a crowd.
I've been here few times...good food, good atmosphere and very enjoyable especially if you go there with a group. Don't order cactus salad, but shrimps are quite good.
My favorite mexican restaurant in Tokyo. They even have real mariachis from Mexico! Place is great, food is great and music is also great. I love to go there.
so what's the name of the place?
cheers.
The atmosphere is great and so is the food. It is a little expensive, but where else can you find good Mexican food in Tokyo?
