Relocated from London to Tokyo just recently. I'm interested in art and design related events, and gigs. Mainly pop/rock/noise but also electronica. Currently learning Japanese, but at a sleep-inducingly slow pace.

  • Lounge-bar on the 6th floor, large window fronts on two sides with a nice view over Nakameguro. A few tables, and some loungy cushions. OK food, random music.

Cross the street from Nakameguro station, and enter the small street right of the Pachinko place. Chano-ma is after 30m on the left-hand side (elevator).

  • By far the most exiting place I've been to so far, and strangely enough it's not a bar.

The Zeniarai Benten Shrine looks inconspicious from the outside, it basically appears to be just a hole in a wall. Through a little tunnel though you get to an opening with shops, ponds, a cafe, and a cave where you can wash your money in order to double it.

Located in Kamakura, and not too easy to find. More info on japan-guide.com: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e 3111.html
  • 'Go Slow' is the lunch cafeteria at the IID (Ikejiri Institute of Design), a converted elemenatry school that now houses architects, designers, photographers and the like.

Lunch from 11:30 til 15:00, tea time from 15:00 til 18:00. Closed Mondays.

Go Slow's menu changes daily, you'll have a choice between a green curry dish, a pasta dish, two out of six different little bowls with Japanese delicacies, or one large deli dish. All with rice, chicken soup, and a coffee (hot or cold) for a mere ¥800.

The place is nice, the food fantastic, so are the people in the kitchen. If you're in the area around lunchtime, there's just no excuse for not eating here. I'm there every day. Also because I work in the same building.
  • A great little bar and kitchen, not far from Naka-meguro station, with large windows facing the tree lined river. Prices are reasonable and they serve good food, with an unexplicable fondness for Spam though.

Menu, staff and guests are Japanese.

The owners ran a bookshop before opening the combine, which explains the massive bookshelf covering one entire wall that you are welcomed to browse through while waiting for your always late friends.

The Combine is open until very late, they close whenever they feel like the party's over.

This is a really cool little cafe.
Close to Daikanyama, Ebisu, Nakmeguro and Ikejiri. Located on a little road in front of a canal/river. There are lots of other places on that same road but this is the only one I have been to.
