  • A wonderful album. Saw them perform the title track in London a few years ago including a good 15 minute violin solo (though my sense of time was a little... warped). Every track is a standout, and the cover photo is amazing!

First listened to this when I was about 15 and thought it was rubbish. The subsequent decade was totally wasted as a result. My bad. From the opening speech on ("Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time, for y'all have knocked her up..."), this is utterly fried stuff. 'Maggot Brain' must rank among the greatest guitar solos of all time, but the ensuing funk/soul/rock workouts are just as strong. Oh, and then there's the closing jam, 'Wars of Armageddon', which even throws canned studio laughter and a cuckoo clock into the mix... Okay, maybe there's a reason this shit didn't make sense when I was 15.
