Which level did you start at? I recommend avoiding the games (遊戯) section for a bit. It's quite difficult as the questions span across all levels.

What are the actual differences between this one and the original 200万人の漢検?

This actually is the "original" game, as it came out first. The one that followed is subtitled とことん漢字脳 and can be found here.

The main difference is that Kanken DS only covers up to 2kyu while とことん漢字脳 has questions up to 1kyu.

In terms of presentation, Kanken DS wins by a longshot. The screens are nicer, the text is easier to read, and the overall presentation is top notch.

とことん漢字脳 looks like it was thrown together at the last minute without much thought put into appearance. The font is a bit hard to read, so if you have bad eyes, you may want to passl

That said, they are both excellent resources. Even though I use Kanken DS almost daily, I will occassionally pull out とことん for a different sample of questions. If you're serious about studying for the Kanken, there's no reason not to get both. The bigger the pool of practice questions the better.

  • I've been working on Kanken for a while now, it's really gratifying when the kanji you study comes up in an article or in class. it's also a great reminder of how very, very little kanji I actually know.... >.>

now im addicted to it.. i actually had the real exam in school so i had studied lots, but didnt know that i was writing so many kanji in wrong strike-order..
the good part of it is that it has wide range of levels so you dont have to study the ones thats too easy or too difficult for you, and i like it most that in practice mode the question that i didnt answer right appears again, which is quite helpful to your memory. it is like a private kanji teacher :)

I am a huge fan of this title. I have been using it almost every day since its release date. It's been an invaluable tool in preparing for the Kanji Kentei examination.

To clear up a couple points brought up in the comments here...

    1. This game is designed for people preparing to take the Kanji Kentei. More info here. While it may prove useful to those studying for the JLPT, there is no correlation between the two tests.

    2. This game does not contain a dictionary. Perhaps the dictionary refered to is this one?

I haven't tried it yet, but this seems to be the DS Kanji tool I've been looking for! Specially made for people Looking to take JLPT tests.

  • Did you buy it? Let me know when you try it out. Last year someone told me about such a ds cart but they didnt know the name. Are there other such carts for the ds to help with japanese?
  • Ixion says
I'm getting it as soon as I can find a ds...

theres a few videos on thejapanshop.com... the dictionary looks good too - you can bookmark words and study them later etc.
