Has anyone listened to it yet?
I've only listened to it a few times, and my impression is that it's a mix of a bit of everything they've done, some computers but they also rock it too.
Just like everything by them I like it more with every listen!
I read in the news today that a distributor has been determined for North America and the album will be out in CD format in stores next Jan or something like that. I wonder if the download-for-however-much deal will still be around then...

  • Jrim says: Radiohead release new album... on their own... for free

As The Telegraph and Pitchfork report, Radiohead's new album is coming out a little bit earlier than people had predicted. As in: next week. As if that wasn't enough of a shock, the album is going to be self-released, and is available in both a luxury Discbox edition (CD and LPs, plus artwork and whatnot, all yours for 40 quid) and a download version that costs however much you want it to. Seriously, I'm not making this up.

Even if this album is a load of second-rate prog bollocks, Radiohead fucking rock. I know they're not the first band to have gone down this route (Underworld, for instance, have been experimenting with unorthodox online distribution methods for a few years now), but they're definitely the highest profile one. It seems like a really good model, too: release something as soon as it's ready (not as song as your record company tells you they can release it), give the fanboys (and girls) the high-grade fetish object they crave, give everyone else what they would've got off PirateBay anyway (but with the option of giving a little bit back if they want to).

All I worry about now is that the album is just a load of second-rate prog bollocks.

Yeah, granted - from a muso perspective they're very good. But try as I might, I can't bring myself to care about the rhythm section of Radiohead any more than I did The Smiths. They work great within the context of the band, but I'd never run out and buy a Colin Greenwood solo album, even if you gave me the money for it.

  • Enough of the John and Paul/Johnny Thom, if you really want talent, take a deeper look at the other members of both bands.
  • Oliver says
Bodhi, I can compare Radiohead to whom ever I want. Thing is, Paul is totally undervalued, because he acts and sings like a jerk most of the time. But once you get him angry, like in Helter Skelter or Birthday, man, the dude rocks. Also he plays Bass like a fucking Genius. Come together.

But thinking about it again Tom is Paul-John and Johnny a George-John Combo.

Paul: Popular, overly self controlled maniac
John: Obvious genius, crazy sexy marketing specialist
George: Spirit, cool, real, zen, man of music
Ringo: Mr jive, mr true fun

Maybe you can't compare them directly, but a comparison is nevertheless revealing. It reveals that Tom is not as great as we thought. He's too popular, and that puts him in the same box with Paul. While Johnny is solo as interesting and disconnected as John. If I had to choose - and hopefully I will never have to choose - I'd choose Johnny over Tom.

You can't compare Radiohead with the Beatles. Anyway Thom would not be Paul, he'd be more a John George combo!
  • Oliver says
Yeah, crazy stuff. Yorke is Paul, Johnny is John.
  • Well no, Tom Yorke is not Radionhead, so you should not compare his solo work to Radiohead. Of course there are a lot of similarities to previous Radiohead albums, but that just shows you can take Tom Yorke out of Radiohead but you can't take the Radiohead out of Tom Yorke. Has anyone heard the solo work Johnny Greenwood did for the movie Bodysong

  • Yorke's solo album, "The Eraser", seemed to me a prolongation of Amnesiac...nothing new...

It's not bad, but I was expecting much more from him....well, after all, he's not Radiohead.
