I'm currently living in Japan and I'm looking for a design job. I've been searching the major job sites (gaijinpot, joblet, daijob, tabjobs) but there is not a lot out there right now. Do you have any tips for getting noticed in the bilingual, Japanese design world?

    Hey All,

I'm putting together a survey, covering sake (nihon-shu) preferences among international residents and travelers in Japan, for the advertising/marketing courses I'll teach at Temple University this summer. I figured I'd quiz the group and see what creatives like us have to say.

If you can take a few minutes to add your answers, that'd be very much appreciated! I'll owe you one next time!-)

*Note: The survey asks for your first/last name, but you can use just a first name and write "Asoboo" for the last name if you'd like to say anonymous.

From personal experience, the only way to survive as an artist is to create that job position. You can be one of the rare and stumble right into your dream. Or you can be one of the few and make it happen (sorry if it sounds like a recruiting ad, but it's true!).

I joined Asoboo to meet people that want to MAKE film/tv happen. NHK, TOHO, or Madhouse isn't just going to recruit me, my ideas or my camera. I'm going to have to make something they want a piece of.

And so the plan is to make it happen with a little help from my friends. Two are on board, anyone else?

  • Martine says: Photography work in Tokyo
I've been living in Tokyo for 5 years now and working as an English teacher while (self) studying photography. I'm pretty ready to make the leap this year so if anyone has any advice or leads on photography work or good agents, please let me know.

I'm up for editorial / commercial / functions & events / bands / head shots and yes.... I've done a wedding or two and think I can handle the stress now....

Is it really true that designers in Japan doesn't get the same kind of respect and appreciation as in europe or us?

This group sounds fascinating, I'm glad to have found it! I'm currently studying Japanese and am becoming more and more interested in the culture, particularly when it comes to design, packaging and character creation. I'm a bit sad to see that creatives get less respect there though, especially when I've seen such amazing design come out of Japan. I'm thinking of moving over there for a year and would like to continue working as a graphic/web designer, but maybe it would be easier for me to teach English with my limited Japanese...

    Nice to meet you all!

I'm looking for freelance webdesign work in the Tokyo area. Does anyone have any tips on companies, sites etc? I'll be moving to Tokyo in July next year. I speak very little japanese, but am planning to take a course once in Tokyo.

  • I actually found my new job (webdesign/advertisement) on Tokyo Art Beat, so thank you guys !
For people searching, you should also give a try to japanese websites like findjob.jp and else. There is PLENTY of work here - but yes, being fluent in japanese in a real plus.

Hey! I'm new to this site and I just found this group which is kind of exactly what I have been looking for. I am currently in Japan as an English teacher but my real reason for being here is to work in the film industry. If anyone has any tips or leads, please let me know. Or, even better, if you can hook me up with a job I will be forever in your debt. I can speak and read some Japanese, but I'm far from fluent and I have no ability to speak politely. Help me out.
