Hey you guys, I've got a couple of questions, hope you can help me ;-)

I'm planing to come to Japan on the 2nd of august and travel around till the 30th of august. I would like to start my trip in Hirado (because the first dutch arrivel in 1600) and end up in Tokyo, taking the Court Journey (see the link).

-Can anybody tell me if its easier to fly to Kukuoka and travel over land to Hirado, or fly to Nagasaki and travel to Hirado over land? Or is there another solution?
-Does anybody know what kind of railpass I need to get? And what's best: buy it in Holland or wait and buy it in Japan?
-Tips for (nice and cheap) sleep-overs, hotels and ryokans are also very welcome ;-)

Thank you very much in advance!!

If you are looking for inspiration on places to visit, check out the photos that ippei+janine post on their Flickr account:

They share some really gorgeous shots of incredible locations all around Japan - some very close to Tokyo, too. Enjoy!

This will be obvious to Tokyo residents ... or not.

It's close by, in Yokohama, and I pass it all the time (at high speed, usually) on the Kousokudouro. But I got off the highway once, and the stop was well worth it. The Sankeien opened around 100 years ago, and in addition to the gardens, collects a number (10?) of historic buildings from around Japan.

One of my favorite buildings from anywhere on earth is the large thatched gassho farmhouse ... built about 210 years ago by Sasuke Iwase, one of the richest men in Hida district, Gifu-ken, and moved to its current site in 1960. It's a fantastic day out from Tokyo and not far at all ...

    In Kyoto.

Very friendly staffs, private, and insanely beautiful scenery. There is a small, but beautiful Japanese garden opposite the lobby. Breakfast not provided, and comes with extra charge. Just inform them the night before, and they will arrange it for you.

I wish I had stayed more than a night at this place. :)

  • whatjazz says: Kurokawa Onsen, Kyushu
Went to Kurokawa onsen in Kumamoto at the end of 2007, and it's definitely one of the better hotsprings I've visited. Beautiful, large rotenburos, and usually several of to choose from, all tucked away in the mountain. Kyushu, in general, seems to be fabulous for onsen, the nearby nature and open spaces allow for that "secluded" feel away from the city. Highly recommended.
