Description
Hanga is the Japanese word for woodblock print but it is also used to describe the Japanese abstract movement of the early 20th century 1910 until ca. 1960, which has unfortunately gone widely un noticed in history, both in Japan and other countries. Part of the reason for this is the intense external focus upon internationally acclaimed artists at the time such as Pablo Picasso and Modern design movements.
The word Hanga is also often used instead of the proper term Shin hanga, literally meaning New Prints.
The image above is one of my favorite examples of the Hanga movement, by Ito Shinsui. I also made a homage to this print on my website: http://www.dadako.com/wordpress/?p=437
(comments are most welcome)
The Hanga movement can also been seen as transition from Ukiyo-e to Manga. A missing link of new techniques and materials.
